Our County Charity

Girlguiding Royal Berkshire are proud to announce that we have adopted the Venture Force Foundation as our County Charity!

Read on to find out a bit about them, and what you can do to support them...

Who are the Venture Force Foundation and what do they do?

The Venture Force (VF) Foundation is a registered charity (charity no. 1152431) which was set up by the Directors of Venture Force (a UK based provider of adventurous expeditions all over the world) with the aim of generating funds to support sustainable projects in developing countries.

The VF Foundation’s primary aim is to build a new premises for the Eugemot Orphanage in Ghana. The current orphanage is home to 56 children and staff, is small, cramped, does not have appropriate facilities and is in a bad state of repair. The VF Foundation have provided funds and volunteers (in the form of expedition groups from the UK) to build a new home which will provide a bed for every child, showers, toilets, proper cooking facilities and safe drinking water.

Since the project started in 2012, huge progress has been made. Three brand new buildings have been constructed, all by volunteers with the support of local tradesmen. Girl guiding Berkshire is very proud to have sent two groups of volunteers to contribute towards the project so far - a group of Senior Section girls in 2014, and a group of adult leaders in 2017.

But the project does not finish here - the lease on the current orphanage expires at the end of 2017 and the buildings still need to be fully plumbed, have electrics installed and be kitted out with furniture.  Significant funds are needed in a short space of time to achieve this.

How can Girlguiding Royal Berkshire Help?

We will be running several initiatives throughout the year to raise funds for the VF Foundation, including:

  • A Project Ghana challenge pack and badge, with activities suitable for all ages, available for all units to buy
  • Small scale Fundraising events held by units and the County - let us know if you want to be involved!
  • Larger scale fundraising events - watch this space for the first one coming in June!

Adult leaders who visited the project this year would be happy to visit units and do presentations on their experience, to help support any activities you are doing at a unit level.

Can I go to Ghana and be directly involved in the project?

Plans for a return trip to Ghana and the Eugemot Orphanage in October 2018 are underway - we are hoping to take an adult group and a 14+ age group. Although the children and staff will have moved in by this stage, there is still plenty of work to be done. The VF Foundation would like to build a bakery to give the children a chance to learn life skills, and to plant a pineapple farm to give the orphanage a sustainable income.

Taking part in this trip, or future ones, will give our Guides the opportunity to experience life first hand in an African country that has a rich cultural heritage. They will have the opportunity to engage with girls and women in the community, and experience a different way of life, and also contribute to the next stage of the orphanage project.

Essential Info:

  • Cost: £2200
  • Who is eligible: Leaders in good health over the age of 18 and Girlguiding members; Girls aged 14-18 (school years 9 to upper-sixth) at the time of the trip and a member of Girlguiding (can be a Guide, Young Leader, or belong to a RangerSenior Section unit)
  • Will we only be doing a service project? The main focus of the trip is the service project, but there will be a chance to visit a few local sites like the monkey sanctuary, local markets and the tallest waterfall in East Africa
