Sparkle and Ice 2018

Guides and Senior Section members from across the county braved the cold temperatures to sleep under canvas at Girlguiding’s extreme winter camp, Sparkle & Ice.

1st Shinfield Guides, 2nd Langley Guides, 1st Twyford Guides, 1st Sebastian’s Guides and Caversham Senior Section joined hundreds of other girls at Sparkle and Ice at Foxlease on 2nd-4th February.

After pitching their tents, the groups kept warm by making the most of the activities on offer from going on a zip wire, climbing and abseiling, to testing their survival skills by making shelters and building fires. And at night, they had the choice of ditching their welly boots for dancing shoes to enjoy the onsite disco or enjoy a hot chocolate whilst stargazing, before layering up to endure plunging temperatures and take on the challenge of winter camping.

This is the second time Sparkle and Ice has been held following last year’s successful launch. A thousand girls and young women joined the three camps which happened simultaneously across Girlguiding’s activity centres. The event was supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Michael Green - County Treasurer

It is with great sadness that we announce our County Treasurer, Michael Green, passed away peacefully at home last week. Michael has been given 25 years’ service to the County, firstly acting as treasurer for the first WINGS, and then as our treasurer from 1995. Michael has been a support to the 5 County Commissioners whom he has served and has always ensured that our finances have been handled in the most appropriate and proper way.

Our thoughts are with Frances, Michael’s wife, and his family at this sad time.
