Warfield Rainbows raise £714 for Thames Hospice

Girls from 1st Warfield Rainbow Unit gave a huge financial boost to Thames Hospice when they presented a cheque for £714 following one single evening of fundraising.

The Rainbows took part in a range of fundraising activities along with their parents. This included a raffle, a cake sale, a theatre ticket auction, a “win the hamper competition” and a “name the soft toys competition”

The Windsor-based hospice provides care to patients and their families and serves Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire. It costs £7 million a year to run and relies on donations for 80 per cent of its income.

Receiving the cheque on behalf Thames Hospice, Alison Evans, Head of Community & Event Fundraising, said: “We are really humbled and blown away by the support we’ve had from the Rainbows. We’re really pleased that young people get to know about us. It was lovely to give them all their ‘Well done badges’.”

Carol Ellis, Unit Leader of 1st Warfield Rainbows commented: “I’m so proud of the whole Rainbow unit. I’m astounded that we raised so much in one evening.”

It even features some girls from Berkshire units, including 2nd Caversham Park Brownies.

A Surprise at Tilehurst Brownies

Val Weller, the Brown owl at 2nd Tilehurst Brownies, celebrated her 30th years of involvement in Girlguiding on Saturday 15th April by receiving not only her 30th year girlguiding award but also the Berkshire national good service award brooch by her District Commissioner, Melanie Thomas.

The celebration was also Val's 60th birthday celebrations and all her family and Guiding friends watched as she received her award.

However, Val had a surprise of her own as she also sprung a surprise wedding on all her guests. They had no idea that the celebration included her wedding day!

What a great story - congratulations Val!
