Senior Section Team Report

Looking back

The Senior Section team was strengthened this year when the new Queens Guide Advisors joined along with Louisa Brogden.

The team now consists of Tina Hinton (Team Leader), Fay Newbery (Young Leader Advisor), Toni Cook (Peer Educator Co-ordinator), George Eaton and Aimee Higgs (joint Queens Guide Advisor) and Louisa Brogden.

The Reading Monopoly run was organised by the Senior Section Team for 13+, Leaders and Trefoil Guild. This event was well attended by over 40 members. Each team received their mascot for the day which had to accompany the team and be in their photographs. Participants had to visit a number of locations on the Reading monopoly board whilst carrying out additional challenges. These included collecting words with ‘GO’ in the title, taking photographs of hotels, visiting additional locations for ‘community chest’ after being text a location. Teams had to reach the location within 30 minutes to receive special Berkshire Girlguiding money and a bag of chocolates.  For ‘chance’ teams had to find items beginning with each letter of the word monopoly.

The Monopoly day had a community aspect with over 150 bras being donated for Oxfam’s 'Frip ethique'. This initiative raises money in order to help alleviate poverty in Senegal.

The Senior Section resources have been updated by CHQ and replace the old Senior Section CD. The programme now consists of three new record books – Look Wider, Queens Guide and The Commonwealth Award. These are accompanied by downloads of each of the awards (available from the Senior Section webpage on Girlguiding website). For the first time the octants now have a badge and certificate available.

January 2014 sees the launch of the “Movie Badge”.  The badge will be aimed at Senior Section groups or individuals and will consist of 10 challenges selected from a list of movies ranging from chick flicks to fantasy, kids to drama. If your group would like to take part and you have not yet seen the pack, please email Tina Hinton. An Oscar style awards ceremony will take place later in 2014 and prizes will be awarded under a number of categories.

Building on the success of the Reading monopoly this year will see the opportunity to take part in our own London monopoly board. More information will be out later in the year.

Queens Guide Award

George and Aimee took over the Queens Guide Advisor role between them in January. There are currently 8 girls in County working towards the award. Emily Cannell successfully completed her Queens Guide Award and attended the National award ceremony at the Guildhall earlier this year. A new "welcome/info pack" for potential QG candidates is currently being worked on with the aim to roll this out next year.

A poster has been created to try and recruit more Mentors for Queens Guide applicants. Anyone who feels this is something they could help out with should contact George or Aimee directly. There will be a recruitment drive in the New Year, to encourage more girls to undertake the Queens Guide award, and the Advisors plan to visit Senior Section units who may have girls interested.

Young Leaders

Support has been given to individual Young Leaders through one-to-one meetings or visits to the units they are working with as well as via a district training.

The November county training included sessions on Look Wider and the Young Leader scheme for both Leaders and Young Leaders.

Looking forward

The March training will include a morning session for Young Leaders. This plans to give information on the opportunities available to them as well as fun activities which they can be used in the units. Registration for this will open at the same time as the Leaders training.
